Jay Fullam receives Vanderbilt football scholarship
On national signing day in 2008, Mark Fullam’s son, Jay, signed a football scholarship to play safety with Vanderbilt University during a ceremony at McCallie School.
Fullam was on ESPN’s “150 Watch” list as one of the top 150 juniors in the country in 2008. He received offers from Air Force, Navy, Northwestern and received interest from Florida, LSU, Tennessee, Alabama, and Auburn. "I just decided Vanderbilt was the place for me,'' Fullam said. "It offers me the best of both worlds -- a Vanderbilt education and a chance to play safety in the SEC, the best conference in the nation.''
Fullam, a three-time all-state selection, was a versatile threat in all three phases of the game. Most known for his hard-hitting work as a free safety, he recorded 78 tackles in 2008. He also led the D-II AA league in kickoff returns with a 30.2 yard average and two touchdowns. As a running back, he averaged 7.7 yards per carry and scored eight touchdowns on only 33 carries.
Jay follows several family members who are a part of the Blue Tornado legacy: uncles Mike and Gary, class of 1980; brothers, Wayne, who played on McCallie’s 2001 state championship team and Haden, class of 2007; and father, Mark, who played football for McCallie and graduated in 1979.
Mark, the proud father, is one of LEC’s vice presidents and has served as project manager on such diverse projects as the new Blue Cross Blue Shield complex on Cameron Hill, Findley Stadium, the Chattanooga Trade Center renovation. He has been with Lawson Electric since 1984.
